Boat Captain

Position:

Spend your summer and fall giving SNHA’s River Discovery Boat Tours on our historic, USCG-certified passenger vessel, the Chief Uncas! Captain must be a United States Coast Guard (USCG) Licensed Master Captain to operate SNHA’s 55’ long, classic 1912 electric-powered boat. This gorgeous mahogany and white oak boat cruises with up to 24 passengers, a Tour Guide/Crew Member, and a Captain on 1-hour public tours of the Susquehanna River. SNHA also offers longer private cruises and specialty trips. Tours will be offered Thursdays through Sundays between late May and early-November, with private experiences offered on weekends and other weekdays. All tours depart from the Zimmerman Center for Heritage.
Captains must be comfortable working 3-9 hour shifts (sometimes in the evenings) on the Susquehanna River region known as Lake Clarke. Experience is required as well as the ability to successfully interact with the public. The position has flexible hours and weekend work is required. Employment will begin in early May and extend through mid-November.

Responsibilities:

  • Operate a 55’ vessel with up to 24 passengers in compliance with all USCG rules and reporting requirements.
  • Comply with all SNHA Boat Tour Operations standards related to touring, inspections, and operations.
  • Ensure the safety of all passengers and crew members.
  • Know Coast Guard safety procedures and emergency drills.
  • Be able to comply with the USCG-required drug and alcohol program.
  • Contribute to the development of manuals, policies, and protocols.
  • Participate in boat preventative maintenance as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Boat Tour Manager.

Qualifications:

  • Possess a current USCG Master Captain's License for a Small Passenger Vessel Under 100 tons with experience operating a passenger vessel.
  • Be punctual, hard-working, flexible, driven, energetic, and a good communicator.
  • Must be a team player and be able to take direction of others.
  • Valid Pennsylvania driver’s license and ability to travel using own vehicle.

Captain must also ensure that the company’s Accident/Incident/Unusual Occurrence forms and/or USCG Form 2692 is filled out in an accurate, clear, concise, complete and timely manner.
  • Responsible for the appearance and cleanliness of the vessel
  • Ensures periodic engine room inspections are conducted while underway.
  • Document and report maintenance activities and deficiencies in the company’s Wheel-House Software
  • Must be conversant with the vessels Security Plan to ensure that security drills are conducted and recorded as required by company policy and logged a timely manner.
  • Conduct Safety Drills as required by USCG regulations and as may be outlined by Company Policy.
  • Responsible for conducting daily job briefings at the beginning and end of the shift. The completion of the job briefing must be acknowledged and logged in the vessel’s logbook.
  • Responsible for the conduct of all crew to ensure that all company policies are being adhered to.
  • Ensure adherence to Coast Guard rules and regulations, and other federal and local rules and regulation
  • Ensure strict compliance to Emergency Response Plan

Qualifications:

  • Valid 100ton Masters License with a satisfactory record
  • Valid TWIC Card, First Aid/CPR cards
  • FCC Marine Radio Operators Permit
  • Five (5) years maritime experience; with two (2) years as Master preferred
  • Strong focus on safety and teamwork with the ability to establish & maintain effective professional relationships
  • Detailed working knowledge of all ships systems and their proper maintenance
  • Ability to analyze and solve problems while prioritizing tasks in order of importance

This license is properly termed “Operator of Uninspected Passenger Vessels” (OUPV) and is commonly referred to as the “6-pack” or “Charterboat Captain’s License”. The license must provide for operation on US coastal routes out to 100 miles offshore. All OUPV licenses are for 100 Gross Tons vessels. The OUPV license may be upgraded to a Master license. The captain is responsible for safety and efficiency, including operation, navigation, crew management, and ensuring that the vessel complies with local and international laws, as well as company and state policies. All persons on board, including crew, other staff members, passengers, and guests are under the captain's authority and are his or her ultimate responsibility. The captain is responsible for the cleanliness and seaworthiness of the boat and all equipment on board.

  • Operate uninspected vessel of less than 100 GRT (gross register tons), equipped with propulsion machinery, carrying six or fewer passengers
  • Perform daily operational inspection(s); including and not limited to; vessel cleanliness, engine performance, oil level(s), navigational lights, horn, fuel, battery, hull, lines, fenders, additional lighting, Bimini frame & cover
  • Fuel vessel, add oil, change battery, and lightbulbs, if necessary
  • Perform daily safety inspection(s); including and not limited to; All safety equipment, such as life vest(s), Life ring(s), Lifeline/Buoy, VHF Radio, navigational lights, first-aid equipment, capable of operating and inspecting fire extinguisher(s), ladder deployment/retrieval, anchor deployment and setting
  • Management of daily reports; including trips, maintenance, fuel, passenger activity, other statistical demands, and incidents
  • Maintain vessel in excellent condition, inspect and cover vessel at end of each shift
  • Maintain a clean, pleasant, and safe atmosphere for all including team members
  • Greeting all visitors, guests and tenants with exceptional care and providing five-star customer service; including answering any questions and providing local knowledge and information, as requested

Qualifications:

  • Active/Current OUPV License (6-pack), Limited OUPV, or (Higher) Master 25T
  • Enrolled in Drug and Alcohol (DOT) approved testing program (or willingness to enroll in company sponsored program, mandatory pre-hire screening/testing)

Vessel assignments and duties are dependent on license held and experience. New captains generally start on the smaller vessels working up through licensed mate/engineer on the bigger boats and then onto captain of all our vessels.

New captains generally start out as seasonal employees with the possibility of year round work for the right person. Winter work includes delivery, winterizing and maintenance of vessels.
