Need you help
Lee Ann Avery -- Saturday, 8 June 2019, at 8:38 p.m.

Dear Captains:
A while ago, I posted a very formal academic request on this website which was required to follow all the rules and protect the confidentiality of anyone I interview for my research for my doctoral dissertation. I just wanted to follow up with a personal appeal from one sailing captain to another.

I became passionate about doing this research when I sailed the North Atlantic Rally to the Caribbean (NARC) in 2001 and saw how all the sailing captains and crews handled the trip from Newport to Bermuda when we went through a near Force 10 gale. I started observing even before we left Newport and had many conversations with the captains and crew in Bermuda and then again in St. Martin. I did the trip two more times, and my interest kept growing although I had no idea how I would do the research. Some of us did write articles for Cruising World, but I wanted to dig deeper.

I have been working on my PhD for over 10 years just so I could do this research because I believe it is so important. Through many ups and downs, I am finally able to complete this research, and would really like to have your inputs through an hour long conversation of just listening to your sea stories. We can do it by a simple internet meeting at your convenience. The five captains I have interviewed so far have provided great information, but I really want to hear all of your perspectives to make this research as comprehensive and meaningful as possible.

Please contact me at Fairwinds57@gmail.com so we can set up a time to talk. I’d really appreciate your help with this, and I think you will be very interested in the final results. Thank you so much. Remember everything is strictly confidential.

Interviewing Sailing Captains for PhD Research
Lee Ann Avery -- Thursday, 28 February 2019, at 4:04 p.m.

Dear Captains: I am researching for my dissertation how sailing captains lead in extreme situations such as when there is a strong potential for massive physical, psychological, or material consequences to them, the crew and/or the boat, such as storms, accidents, and any other similar situation. As an offshore sailor myself, I believe your stories will contribute to our understanding of these events.

I am contacting you through your member website as someone who has potentially been through these types of events and has stories to tell. I would very much like to interview you to hear your stories. If you have been through these kinds of events with crew on board, I very much hope that you will respond to this email by contacting me at Fairwinds57@gmail.com.

I expect that the interview will take about one to two hours and we can either meet in person if you are in the Seattle area or use Zoom to conduct the interview. I will send you a Zoom meeting notice that you can use to enter the meeting with me at the agreed upon time. I will be recording these interviews and then transcribing them into text so that I can analyze them.

Your confidentiality and anonymity will be protected by me. I will remove all references to your name from all written records. The only place your name will appear is in the emails we share arranging for the interview, and on your Consent Form, which will not be connected to the written record of the interview and kept secure on my computer.

If you can help me with this research by granting me an interview, I will explain more details about how your name will be protected and answer any of your concerns.

If you are willing to help me with this interview, please email me back with your location and the best way for us to meet or some good times for us to connect by Zoom. I am located in the Seattle area in Mukilteo, WA and would be happy to meet with you in person if you are close by. I look forward to hearing back from you. Also, if you know of other captains who could contribute to this research, please pass on this email on to them.
